During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she decided to talk openly and share her personal story, even the difficult parts.

In her own words, she wrote, “For breast cancer awareness month, I’d like to share more of my own personal journey from my first diagnosis to my second. Is it all pretty? NO but it’s truthful, and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like.”

Shannen Doherty invited everyone to join her on her cancer treatment journey, whether they followed her on social media or not. She posted a video on Instagram announcing the start of her radiation treatment. She shared about getting a special mask fitted for the CT scans she needed for radiation on her brain. She wrote, “January 12, 2023. Last week, my CT scan showed that the cancer had spread to my brain. In yesterday’s video, you saw me getting fitted for the mask I’ll wear during my brain radiation.”

During this time, Shannen also talked about the emotional struggles she faced. She mentioned being claustrophobic and uncomfortable in small spaces. She openly talked about her fear and turmoil, saying, “On January 12, I had my first round of radiation. You can see my fear. I’m very claustrophobic, and there was a lot happening in my life. I’m lucky to have great doctors like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the wonderful technicians at Cedar Sinai. But that fear… the turmoil… the timing… This is what cancer looks like.”

A few days later, Shannen shared a video before going into surgery. She was scheduled to have a tumor removed and biopsied. Showing her vulnerable feelings, she wrote, “January 16, 2023. Surgery. I had a tumor in my head that had to be taken out and tested. I’m clearly trying to be brave, but I’m terrified. Fear overwhelmed me. I worried about all the bad things that could happen, leaving my mom, and how surgery might change me. This is what cancer looks like.”

Shannen’s bravery and honesty have touched many people, showing the harsh realities of living with cancer. Her willingness to share the tough moments of her journey gives a glimpse into how cancer affects people emotionally and physically.
