“I work at a hotel, and here’s a tip: When you first enter your room, don’t turn the lights on right away.”

There’s a creepy reason why you should enter your hotel room with the lights off…

If you’re planning a getaway for some sun while the UK gets chilly, there’s an important tip to remember. After a long flight or bus ride, it’s tempting to crash on the hotel bed and rest, but that might not be the best idea.

Travel expert Halee, with over 15 years of experience in hotel sales, has gained 127,000 followers online by sharing useful advice. In a recent TikTok video, she warned tourists not to turn on the lights when entering their hotel room. This could help you spot bed bugs, which might otherwise stay hidden.

Halee suggests carefully checking your bed, even under the mattress protector, for bed bugs, which can cause problems for your skin and clothes. “First, make sure your room is dark,” Halee said. “Turn off the lights, close the curtains, and use your phone’s flashlight. Also, look for a mattress pad. Even if you don’t see any bugs, check for stains like blood spots because that’s not a good sign.”

Many worried viewers shared their thoughts in the comments. Several mentioned that they always check for bed bugs before settling into a new hotel room. One user, who works as a housekeeper at an IHG hotel, wrote, “I check every bed when I clean a room from top to bottom.”

Another person agreed, saying, “Bed bugs can show up anywhere! People make fun of me for checking, but if you’ve had them, you know why it’s important!” One person mentioned that their fear of bed bugs influences their hotel choices, saying, “I always search for ‘bugs’ in hotel reviews before I book.” Another user shared their experience with bed bugs years ago and now checks every hotel and Airbnb carefully.

Many commenters also noted the importance of keeping your luggage closed and away from the bed until you’ve checked for bugs. If bed bugs get into your suitcase, you might have to get rid of all your clothes.
