Suspect finally identified in the deadly restaurant mass shooting that shook North Carolina.

0

The suspected gunman who opened fire at a crowded dockside restaurant in North Carolina — killing three people and injuring five others — once identified himself as a wounded Iraq veteran and filed a slew of conspiracy-laden lawsuits earlier this year, records show.

Nigel Edge — who changed his name from Sean DeBevoise in 2023 — was arrested Saturday night for launching a “highly premeditated’’ attack on the American Fish Company restaurant in Southport Yacht Basin, about 30 miles south of Wilmington, when he suddenly sprayed bullets into the crowd of unsuspecting diners, authorities said.

Nigel Edge was taken into custody Saturday night after the deadly attack at American Fish Company restaurant in Southport Yacht Basin.

One of the wounded victims is still “clinging to life,” officials told reporters Sunday, adding that many who were at the restaurant last night were from out of state.

Edge, 39, was armed with a short barrel AR rifle, equipped with a suppressor, with a folding stock and scope, court documents charge.

The suspect, described as a “lone wolf’’ by authorities, faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

The motive has yet to be determined, police said.

But records show Edge has been behind several bizarre lawsuits filed in North Carolina this year — including one accusing a Southport church of trying to kill him.

Three people were killed and eight others injured in the shooting.

The suit, filed in May, claimed the Generations Church was behind a “civil conspiracy” masterminded by the LGBTQ community and white supremacist pedophiles to kill Edge because he’s “a straight man.”

In January, Edge filed a similar suit against the Brunswick Medical Center, accusing it of being part of a conspiracy launched by “LGBTQ White Supremacists” who were allegedly out to get him because he survived their attack in Iraq.

Both lawsuits were dismissed with prejudice, according to court records.

The wild claims in the lawsuits echo those detailed in a book written by Nigel when he went by Sean DeBevoise, “Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation,” where he claims that he was shot four times, including in the head, by friendly fire over an international conspiracy.

He claims he served in the Marines Corps and was deployed to Haiti and then served two tours in Iraq when he found himself in the middle of the conspiracy ring.

The Marine said he was wounded in two separate IED attacks during a 2006 tour in Iraq, along with a bullet wound that left shrapnel lodged in his head.

North Carolina authorities identified Edge as a combat veteran allegedly suffering from PTSD.

The Marines did not respond to The Post’s request for comment and confirmation of Edge’s service.

He was previously seen on the red carpet accompanying “American Idol” star Kellie Pickler to the Country Music Awards in 2012.

Following the mass shooting, police said the gunman quickly took off on the Intracoastal Waterway and was spotted at around 10 p.m. trying to load a vessel along the marina on Oak Island.

He was arrested by the US Coast Guard.

Edge was being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center without bond, according to court records.

He is due to appear in court Monday for an initial hearing.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said the investigation is ongoing as he asked for people to keep the victims in their prayers.

“We’re a small community, one of the communities where everybody knows everybody,” the chief told reporters. “It’s just a very tragic night.”

Coring and local officials said that Edge has no significant criminal history, but his civil lawsuits and “minor brushes with the law” made him known to officials in Oak Island, where the suspect lived.

Infant Born with Rare Condition That Separates Face in 2 Halves Due for Life-Changing Surgery to ‘Button’ Him Up

0

Brody Shain was born with a severe bilateral cleft lip and palate, plus a birth defect that caused his brain tissue to grow through his skull

Nearly a year after an infant was born with a rare condition that caused his face to be split in half, his family is preparing for a life-changing surgery that could help him on the path to becoming “buttoned up.”

When Brody Shain, now 11 months, was born, he had a a severe midline facial cleft, meaning his face is literally split down the middle, with a hole where his upper lip and tip of his nose should be.

“When he came out, we were all in shock,” his mother Brandy, who hails from the Dallas suburb of Rockwall, told NBC-DFW.

Along with the cleft lip and palate, Brody was born with encephalocele, a “birth defect where brain tissue grows through an opening in your newborn’s skull,” per the Cleveland Clinic.

It can be life-threatening, but surgery can help treat it. In Brody’s case, it’s causing a bulge in the roof of his mouth where brain tissue is pushing through, and requires Brody to be fed through a feeding tube.

Brandy, who quit work to be Brody’s full-time caretaker, said that her son is qualified for a surgery conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Fearon, a pediatric plastic surgeon at Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

Fearon has conducted twelve such procedures — the condition is rare, affecting about one in 100,000 births, according to NBC-DFW — in an effort to bring together the different halves of the face.

“The initial surgery is planned to first repair the encephalocele (a portion of the brain hanging down below the floor of the skull into his mouth). A second operation will move the two halves of the face together to repair the midline facial cleft,” Dr. Fearon tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Additional smaller operations (3 or 4?) might focus on improving the appearance of the nose and upper lip. “

He adds, “I believe his prognosis is quite good.”

However, the first procedure is just the beginning. Brody will need multiple surgeries, and the first one carries an out-of-pocket price tag of $15,000. According to NBC-DFW, Brody’s first surgery is scheduled for late September and will fall three days before his first birthday.

GoFundMe has since been established for the family’s medical costs. Organizer Jody Crocker shared in the fundraiser description that the initial surgery “is a major step toward allowing [Brody] to breathe, eat, and grow without the constant barriers of a feeding tube and oxygen.”

Brandy told NBC-DFW, “The big picture is hard to wrap your mind around, but as we go along, we just take it each day. With these surgeries coming up, those encephalocles are going to be removed, the palate is going to be fixed, and that’s one step closer to them getting to close up his face. The next surgery will be the closing of his face.”

She added, “I can’t wait to see what he’s going to look like.”

Black Woman Found Dead, Decaying in Prison Cell Weeks After Giving Birth

0

Nationwide — Sheqweetta Vaughan, a 32-year-old African American woman held at a northeast Georgia prison, was found dead in her cell back in July. Months after giving birth, her body showed signs of decay, raising new concerns about prison conditions and inmate care.

On July 9, staff at Lee Arrendale State Prison reported finding Vaughan unresponsive. Habersham County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Franklin said officers had checked on her at 10:08 a.m. and discovered her dead about 30 minutes later. When Franklin arrived shortly after noon, he estimated she had been dead for two to four hours.

According to 11Alive, Franklin noted that extreme heat and poor ventilation in the cell sped up decomposition, making it difficult to confirm the exact time of death. His report said the temperature inside reached the 90s, with almost no airflow. By the time he entered, a strong odor of decay filled the space.

The coroner confirmed no drugs or contraband were found. Vaughan’s body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy, but her cause of death remains undetermined.

Her death has drawn the attention of Motherhood Beyond Bars, a nonprofit that supports incarcerated mothers. Executive Director Amy Ard said Vaughan had given birth six months earlier and attended the group’s childbirth education program. Ard called the conditions of Vaughan’s solitary cell “inhumane,” pointing to the summer heat and lack of air conditioning.

“It was way too hot for anyone, postpartum or not, to be in a unit where there’s no airflow, no air conditioning, no air flow, in Georgia in the summertime,” she said.

Ard also questioned whether the required 30-minute checks on isolated inmates were actually carried out that morning, citing the coroner’s description of Vaughan’s body.

Vaughan was serving a two-year sentence and expected to return home after release.

The Georgia Department of Corrections has not answered questions about staff checks or cell temperatures on the day of her death. The agency has announced plans to close or repurpose Lee Arrendale State Prison and replace it with a larger women’s facility.

Whoopi Goldberg calls for invoking 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office

Whoopi Goldberg suggested forcibly removing President Trump from office over his “unhelpful” United Nations General Assembly speech — igniting a firestorm of backlash online.

The lefty co-host of “The View” declared that other world leaders are “really concerned for” the US under Trump’s leadership.

“He had a chance to deliver much more than what he did, and they don’t consider him to be serious anymore. I’m worried,” Goldberg said during Wednesday’s show.

“He had a chance to deliver much more than what he did, and they don’t consider him to be serious anymore. I’m worried,” Goldberg said about Trump’s speech at the U.N.

The former actress then suggested invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president who is deemed unable to fulfill the duties of the office.

“Well, they questioned Biden’s competence. If Biden had acted like this I would have said, ‘Yeah take him’ … This was not presidential and this was not helpful,” Goldberg said.

Some of the other “The View” hosts agreed with Goldberg, with Sonny Hostin accusing the president of lying to the UN General Assembly about ending seven wars across the globe in the hopes of winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

“Well, they questioned Biden’s competence. If Biden had acted like this, I would have said, ‘Yeah take him’ … This was not presidential and this was not helpful,” Goldberg said.

Critics were quick to retaliate on social media, many of whom stood in defense of Trump.

“She was curiously silent during the dementia years of 2021 – 2025” one user wrote.

“Why do we care what she has to say? Clearly she is unable to put reading and comprehension together in a cohesive way. The 25th amendment has nothing to do with disagreeing with the other party, and she had nothing to say about a mentally incapacitated Biden,” said another.

Trump delivered a fiery address to the UN on Tuesday, questioning the purpose of the international organization and ripping it for hiding behind “empty words” while underwriting “an assault on Western countries” through mass migration.

The atmosphere grew tense as Trump also declared, “your countries are going to hell.”

“It’s time to end the failed experiment of open borders. You have to end it now,” he went on.

The address, however, did get off to a wonky start when a teleprompter malfunction forced the president to ad-lib.

Trump made light of the situation, saying whoever was in charge of the teleprompter would be in “big trouble,” drawing laughs from the crowd — which Goldberg desperately tried to claim were made to ridicule him, not along with his jokes.

Multiple times throughout his speech, he complained about the tech failure and about an escalator that broke down just as he and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto it.

“These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he quipped at another point.

Shane Tamura, gunman in shooting at NFL headquarters, had CTE: Medical examiner

0

Shane Tamura, who drove cross-country from Las Vegas and opened fire at the New York headquarters of the NFL, killing four, had CTE, the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Friday, confirming what was in the shooter’s own writings.

Police found a three-page note in Tamura’s pocket claiming he had a traumatic brain injury and blaming the NFL for “concealing the dangers to players’ brains to maximize profits.”

Elsewhere, Tamura wrote, “Study my brain please. I’m sorry.”

Tamura died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Following a thorough assessment and extensive analysis by our neuropathology experts, OCME has found unambiguous diagnostic evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE, in the brain tissue of the decedent. The findings correspond with the classification of low-stage CTE, according to current consensus criteria,” the medical examiner’s office said.

“CTE may be found in the brains of decedents with a history of repeated exposure to head trauma. The science around this condition continues to evolve, and the physical and mental manifestations of CTE remain under study,” it continued.

The medical examiner’s office previously said Tamura died by suicide of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The pathologists do not say whether CTE played a role.

The NFL said in a statement, “We continue to grieve the senseless loss of lives, and our hearts remain with the victims’ families and our dedicated employees.”

“There is no justification for the horrific acts that took place,” the NFL statement continued. “As the medical examiner notes ‘the science around this condition continues to evolve, and the physical and mental manifestations of CTE remain under study.'”

Four people were killed in the shooting: Aland Etienne, a security guard for the building; Wesley LePatner, an executive at Blackstone who was a wife and mom; Didarul Islam, a police officer who was a dad of two; and Julia Hyman, a young employee at Rudin Management. All except for Hyman were killed in the building’s lobby.

All of the victims in the lobby were shot in less than 30 seconds.

Tamura then moved to the elevator bank, inexplicably allowing a woman to pass unharmed, police said. Detectives believe he went looking for the NFL offices but entered the wrong elevator.

He ended up on the 33rd floor about 6:28 p.m.

In that time, office cleaner Sebije Nelovic said Tamura fired at her but missed. Nelovic said in a statement sent by her union that she ran down the hall, hid in a closet and “started praying.”

She said she heard shouting, then footsteps, as the gunman moved toward the closet where she was hiding.

Actor Mike Heslin Died After Restaurant Staff Failed to Intervene or Perform Lifesaving Acts After Collapse, Complaint Alleges

0

Actor Mike Heslin allegedly died after staff at the Las Vegas restaurant he was dining at failed to intervene when he collapsed in June 2024, a new complaint alleges.

Heslin — known for his work on projects such as the TV series Lioness and the movie The Holiday Proposal Plan — died at age 30 on July 2, 2024. The late star’s husband, Scotty Dynamo (née Nicolas James Wilson), confirmed that he died “from an unexpected cardiac event after a week long battle in the hospital” in an Instagram post.

“Michael was young, in perfect health and the doctors have no explanation for what happened,” Dynamo said at the time.

In a wrongful death complaint obtained by PEOPLE, which was filed on Sept. 18 in the Clark County District Court in Nevada, Dynamo accused staff at the high-end Mexican restaurant Javier’s of failing to perform lifesaving intervention after Heslin suffered a medical emergency at the restaurant, located in the Aria Resort & Casino on June 25, 2024.

The complaint alleged that Heslin’s friends immediately called for help and moved the table out of the way to lay him on the floor.

However, the complaint claimed that Aria and Javier’s employees “stood by, took no immediate lifesaving action, and failed to initiate or support efforts that could have saved Michael’s life.”

They’re also accused of failing to perform CPR and not retrieving an automated external defibrillator (AED).

“Upon information and belief, Defendants either failed to keep a stock and inventory of emergency response equipment, including, but not limited to, an automated external defibrillator (AED), or failed to train their staff on where the AEDs were stored,” the complaint alleged.

A woman allegedly attempted to perform CPR on Heslin at one point. However, the complaint alleged that an employee “forcefully interfered” and removed her from the scene.

“Defendant’s failures, individually and cumulatively, proximately caused or substantially contributed to Michael’s preventable death,” the complaint alleged. “Michael’s death was an avoidable tragedy.”

The complaint alleged that employees allegedly threatened to have Heslin’s friends arrested or trespassed and reportedly demanded that they delete any video footage of the incident.

Dynamo is suing on five counts of wrongful death; loss of consortium; negligence; negligent hiring, retention, training and supervision; and gross negligence.

Dynamo and Heslin’s estate is seeking general and special damages exceeding $15,000, as well as funeral expenses, loss of consortium in excess of $15,000, punitive damages, reasonable attorney’s fees and costs, interest at the statutory rate and for such other relief as the court deems just and proper.

Orlando De Castroverde with De Castroverde Law Group, who is representing Heslin’s husband in the complaint, said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, “We are going to fight tooth and nail, in honor of Mike’s memory, to hold those responsible, accountable.”

“This was a systematic failure by the staff and management of ARIA, MGM International and Javier’s. The pain and heartbreak felt by Mike’s husband, Nicholas, and his friends could have been prevented if the Defendants had maintained an automated external defibrillator on the premises and had adequately trained staff to provide lifesaving assistance to patrons,” he added.

“Mike’s death was a preventable tragedy. It could have been avoided had the Defendants simply allowed a medically trained guest at the scene to continue performing CPR. Instead, Defendants interrupted the CPR, forcibly removing the Good Samaritan,” De Castroverde alleged. “Defendants went as far as to threaten to trespass Mike’s friends and to demand that they delete any video footage of the event from their phones.”

The complaint comes after Dynamo paid tribute to his late husband, whom he married in November 2023, in a lengthy social media post following his death.

“Michael was brilliant, selfless, talented, and a real-life guardian angel,” he wrote, adding that Heslin had “single-handedly carried me through multiple rounds of cancer.”

“Michael, meeting you was the best thing to ever happen to me. You are my world. You are everything to me. When I felt you take your last breath, my heart shattered into a million pieces. If I had the power to trade places with you, I would do it in an instant. But I will take it one day at a time like you always told me to, and live every day in your honor,” Dynamo continued.

He also confirmed the couple had been “in the early stages of starting a family” a week prior to Heslin’s death.

“You always told me that you felt like you were meant to be a dad, and I couldn’t agree more. You would be the world’s most perfect father. If I ever become a dad, I am going to name my son after you and hope that I manage to raise him to become at least half the man you are,” Dynamo wrote.

English soccer player Billy Vigar dies aged 21 after sustaining ‘significant brain injury’

Tributes have been pouring in for the former Arsenal soccer player Billy Vigar, who has passed away at the age of 21 after suffering a “significant brain injury” during a match last weekend, his club announced.

Chichester City, which plays in the seventh tier of English soccer, confirmed on Thursday that the striker had died following the incident in an Isthmian League fixture against Wingate and Finchley, a match that was subsequently suspended.

The injury was sustained when he reportedly collided with a wall near the pitch.

“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning,” Billy’s family said in a statement via Chichester City.

“The responses to the original update show how much Billy was loved and thought of within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened while he was playing the sport that he loved.”

Arsenal said it was “devastated by the shocking news” of its former academy player, who joined the North London club at 14 years of age before turning professional in 2022.

According to a tribute on the Arsenal website, Vigar was “quick, powerful and fiercely determined.”

The club added: “As well as his significant talent, Billy will always be remembered for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club – he once called the day he was spotted by our scouts as the ‘most important of his life’ – and a character beloved by teammates and coaches alike. Our deepest condolences go out to the Vigar family and his many friends at this extremely difficult time.”

Vigar also played for Derby County, Hastings United and Eastbourne Borough.

Chichester City’s next match scheduled for this Saturday against Lewes has been postponed, while the Isthmian League said that, as a mark of respect, a minute’s silence will be observed before all other matches and all players will wear black armbands.

England’s FA said it was “devastated” to learn of Billy Vigar’s passing, while Chichester paid its own emotional tribute to a player who had only joined the club in recent weeks.

“Rest in peace Billy. Forever in the hearts of all at Chichester City Football Club.”

Student brings gun on school field trip, shoots self in front of classmates

OREM, Utah (KSL) – Students from a school in Utah are traumatized after a classmate brought a gun on a field trip and shot themselves in front of others.

Police said the ninth grader from Canyon View Junior High shot themselves while on a field trip at South Fork Park.

That student was flown to a local hospital, where they died.

KSL does not normally report on suicides, but because the student brought a gun to school and fired it in front of other students, it brings it to another level.

A group of ninth grade students put up a memorial outside the school in memory of the student who died.

They didn’t want to talk on camera, but said they heard the gunshot, which shocked and scared everyone.

Man executed for fatally beating 13-month-old girl during ‘exorcism’

0

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas man was executed Thursday for killing his girlfriend’s 13-month-old daughter in a torturous ordeal the couple said was part of an “exorcism” to expel a demon from the child’s body.

Blaine Milam, 35, was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. following lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was condemned for the December 2008 death of Amora Carson at his trailer in Rusk County in East Texas.

Asked if he wished to make a final statement, Milam thanked supporters as well as the prison chaplaincy for opening its faith-based programs to death row inmates.

“If any of you would like to see me again, I implore all of you no matter who you are to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and we will meet again,” he said from the death chamber gurney. “I love you all. Bring me home, Jesus.”

This undated booking photo provided by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice shows Texas death row inmate Blaine Milam.(Texas Department of Criminal Justice via AP)

As the lethal dose of the sedative pentobarbital began flowing into his right hand and left arm, at 6:19 pm CDT, he grunted and gasped once, then began snoring quietly. After about two minutes, all sounds and movement stopped. Minutes later, he was declared dead.

It was one of two executions carried out Thursday evening in the U.S. Geoffrey West was put to death in Alabama with nitrogen gas for fatally shooting a gas station employee during a 1997 robbery. The two executions brought the year’s total to 33 death sentences carried out nationwide.

Milam had blamed then-girlfriend Jesseca Carson for the killing and alleged she was the one who claimed the girl was possessed by a demon. She was tried separately from Milam and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of capital murder for helping Milam. Both were 18 at the time.

Prosecutors said Milam savagely beat the girl with a hammer and also bit, strangled, and mutilated her over a period of 30 hours.

A forensic pathologist who performed an autopsy found the child had multiple skull fractures along with broken arms, legs, ribs and numerous bite marks. The pathologist testified at trial that he could not determine a specific cause of death because the girl had so many potentially fatal injuries.

Hours earlier on Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Milam’s last appeals.

Rebuffed previously by state and federal appeals courts, Milam’s attorneys had asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution, arguing his conviction was based in part on “now-discredited” bite mark evidence and other unreliable DNA evidence. They also argued he was intellectually disabled and thus ineligible for execution.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office has said Milam’s claims he was intellectually disabled had been rejected in previous court rulings. The attorney general’s office also said in court documents that even if bitemark and DNA evidence were excluded, there was other evidence pointing to his guilt, including his efforts to hide evidence and a confession he made to a nurse after his arrest.

The use of bite mark evidence has been called into question in recent years, with a 2016 report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology saying bitemark analysis “is clearly scientifically unreliable at present.”

Rusk County District Attorney Micheal Jimerson, who tried the case along with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, told The Associated Press in 2019 that authorities initially treated Milam and Carson as grieving parents.

But Carson later told investigators Milam told her Amora was “possessed by a demon” because “God was tired of her lying to Milam,” according to court records.

Jimerson said he still couldn’t pinpoint a motive, believing the exorcism claim was just a way for Milam and Carson to cover up their crime.

“It’s … very hard to confront the idea that someone would derive their gratification from the torture of a baby. That is really something that diminishes all of us and it’s just a very, very hard thing to face,” Jimerson said at the time.

Milam was the fifth person put to death this year in Texas, historically the nation’s busiest capital punishment state. Florida leads the nation this year with a record 12 executions conducted to date in 2025 with two more scheduled in the state by mid-October.

On Tuesday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles had denied Milam’s request to commute his death sentence to a lesser penalty. Milam’s previously had executions dates in 2019 and 2021 that were stayed.
