Are you searching for a way to stay young or to live longer? This 100-year-old woman might have some answers for you.
While there are many trends and technologies promising to help people look younger and stay healthier, food can also play a big role.
Mariam Todd, who is 100 years old and still works six days a week, says there are six simple foods that have helped keep her healthy, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get them.
Mariam Todd, who is from New Jersey, believes her eating habits are the secret to her long life, and she sticks to her routine.
At 100 years old, she still drives, cooks, and works at her late parents’ furniture store, which has been around since 1929. She is also a great-great-grandmother!
So, how does she manage to work 50-hour weeks and still feel energetic? Mariam says it’s all about how she lives her life.
In an interview with Today, she explained that she doesn’t think of her job as work because she enjoys what she does. She said, “I can’t say I’m working when I enjoy it, so I feel guilty if I call it work. It’s not for everybody, but it works well for me.”
Mariam shared that her mother was the same way; she passed away while working at her desk when she was over 80. Mariam said, “If that’s God’s will for my life, so be it.”
While many people dream of retiring, Mariam believes she would never be happy just staying at home.
More than just her work ethic, Mariam credits her healthy diet for her longevity.
She grows a lot of her own food in her garden and regularly enjoys fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, yellow squash, and zucchini. The only canned food she eats is sauerkraut.
Mariam is so healthy at 100 that she hasn’t needed to see a doctor in three years, and she attributes that to her diet. She avoids fast food and alcohol as much as she can.
She also makes sure her meals are colorful and include plenty of vegetables. For dessert, she prefers healthier treats like dark chocolate.
She told Today, “I try to eat right, sleep well, and live well.”
Mariam is also careful about how she saves and spends her money. She understands that it’s tough for younger people to make money and shared some good advice.
She said, “I wish they would think more about saving instead of spending with a credit card. I don’t like credit card debt, and I don’t even own a credit card.”
In the U.S., the average life expectancy is 76 years, and in the U.K., it’s 80 years.
Mariam is doing much better than that, thanks to her healthy diet and her love for work and life.
