A woman in Oklahoma was left reeling after she discovered “half a cat” in her front yard, in what she believes may have been an intentional act of cruelty.

Tulsa resident Shelly Toth told local outlet KJRH that she “went into shock” the moment she saw the cat on her lawn.

“I walked in my house and I just started screaming and crying and pacing,” Toth said in an interview aired on Wednesday, July 16. “I didn’t know what to do.”

Toth said she was sitting at her desk indoors when she noticed a flock of birds circling her lawn. At first, she assumed the birds were looking at a dead raccoon or possum, both of which have appeared on her lawn before.

“I figured it was one of those and I came out to clean it up and unfortunately was shocked to look down and find half of a cat in my yard,” Toth recalled. “I’m still shaking this morning. I just was so far out there with the stress yesterday when I found it, that my body’s just not back together yet.”

Toth told the outlet that she quickly called the Tulsa Police Department, who referred her to Tulsa Animal Welfare. An officer was dispatched to her home to clean up the lawn.

“He looked very disturbed,” she said of the officer, sharing that Animal Welfare told her right away that they would be opening a case. “That’s when it got to me.”

Toth told KJRH that like her neighbors, she often takes care of stray and feral cats since moving into the south Tulsa area by leaving out food and water for them. However, several other residents don’t appreciate having the stray cats in their yards.

“It was obvious that it was not an animal attack,” she claimed. “There was no fur, there was no second half of the body. It was extremely clean cut as if a machete had gone through it.”

Although she believes that this incident may have been a targeted act of animal cruelty, Toth is “going to keep taking care of the animals.”

“Hopefully this won’t keep them from coming to my property,” she finished. “I haven’t seen one cat since this happened.”
