Trump reacts to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement

WASHINGTON — President Trump gave his blessing to pop queen Taylor Swift’s engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce Tuesday — after initially snarking “I wish him a lot of luck.”

Trump, 79, made a similar dismissive statement in the fall of 2020 about Prince Harry and his spouse Meghan Markle, and offered softer additional comments when asked about the Swift-Kelce match during a cabinet meeting.

“No, I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy,” the president said. “I think that she’s a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck.”

Swift, 35, endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris against Trump in last year’s election, calling the Democrat “a steady-handed, gifted leader” who would bring “calm and not chaos.”

The “Cruel Summer” singer revealed her engagement to Kelce, also 35, with a magazine-style photo shoot of the Kansas City Chief tight end kneeling and then embracing her in front of a floral shop’s worth of blooms in an outdoor setting at an unknown location.

Swift, previously known for settling scores with blistering lyrics about her ex-boyfriends, has been dating Kelce since 2023 — during which time Travis’ Kansas City Chiefs have reached back-to-back Super Bowls, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in 2024 and falling to the Philadelphia Eagles this past February.

When the Eagles visited the White House in April, Trump made light of the fact that both he and Swift were in attendance at the Superdome to watch the one-sided championship game.

“It was incredible. A little surprising,” the president said of Philly’s performance. “I was there, along with Taylor Swift. How did that one work out?”

Swift was loudly booed — to her apparent surprise — when she was shown on the big screen early in the game, which did not escape Trump’s notice.

“The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift,” the president wrote on Truth Social that night. “She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”
