Authorities have launched a homicide investigation after a pregnant mother and her 3-year-old were found dead in an Indiana home.
Karon J. Clay, 33, and her son Karter K. Clay were found deceased in a Greenwood, Ind., home on Monday, Aug. 4, by authorities responding to a welfare check, 13 News, The Daily Journal and FOX 59 reported, citing the Greenwood Police Department.
The Johnson County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the deceased to PEOPLE, adding that an examination “determined Karon Clay was pregnant and in her third trimester.”
The bodies had some signs of decomposition, police told 13 News.
While the coroner’s office declined to comment on cause and manner of death at this time, police said in an update that the deaths are being investigated as homicides, per 13 News, FOX 59 and WIBC.
It wasn’t immediately clear if police have a suspect or person of interest in connection with the case. Greenwood police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
“Detectives are working diligently to find who’s responsible for this heinous act and bring them to justice,” Police Chief James Ison told 13 News, declining to comment on specifics in order to “preserve the integrity of this investigation.”
He also told the outlet they are reviewing security footage from neighbors, and continue to look for footage from others in the vicinity of the residence that may show suspicious activity between July 28 and Aug. 1.
