A woman who had recently given birth to twins died after being hit by a deer that was thrown into her windshield following a separate collision, according to authorities and relatives.
Indiana’s Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the “very tragic accident” occurred on State Road 67 near Paragon on Saturday, Oct. 25 — and that two separate vehicles were involved.
“A deer was hit by a car traveling northbound and the deer was flung into the southbound traffic killing the passenger of a vehicle,” police wrote.
Fox affiliate WXIN further reported that it was a Pontiac that struck the deer, which then flew and hit the windshield of a Chevy Blazer.
Police said the victim in the Chevy Blazer who died was Cheyenne Sears, 25, according to WXIN.

According to the outlet, Sears was airlifted to a hospital following injuries sustained in the crash, while a juvenile passenger sitting in the back was also taken for medical treatment. There were no injuries reported in the vehicle that initially struck the deer.
PEOPLE contacted the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office for additional information on Monday, Oct. 27, but did not immediately get a response.

Robert Nash, who identified himself as a cousin of Sears, wrote in a Facebook post that Sears delivered twins a week ago.
“Last night, our family suffered an unimaginable tragedy,” Nash wrote. “My cousin was killed in a car accident, only a week after giving birth to twins. We are absolutely heartbroken. Her babies will never get the chance to know the incredible mother she already was, and our family is trying our best to surround them with love and support.”
Family members told WXIN that Sears worked at Trilogy Health Services.
In a message posted to an online fundraiser for Sears’ family, the company said that she “was a beloved part of our community whose warmth and dedication touched the lives of many residents and families.”
“Her energy, positivity and love for her residents, teammates and community were unmatched,” they added. “Her commitment to creating meaningful experiences and caring for others will be remembered always.”
As of Monday, the fundraiser has generated over $41,000.
