Diff’rent Strokes Actress Melanie Watson Dies at 57 After Hospitalization

Melanie Watson, known for her role on Diff’rent Strokes, has died. She was 57.

The actress died on Friday, Dec. 26, in Colorado Springs, Colo., per TMZ.

Melanie’s brother, Robert Watson, told the outlet that she had been hospitalized and her condition deteriorated.

The former child star was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta and used a wheelchair. The genetic disorder, also known as Brittle Bone Syndrome, is a connective tissue disease that makes your bones fragile, per Mayo Clinic.

Melanie appeared in four episodes of Diff’rent Strokes as Kathy Gordon. The classic sitcom, which starred the late Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges, aired for eight seasons from 1978 to 1986.

Her character was introduced in the third season of the show, and had standout performances in the 1982 episode “Kathy” and the 1984 episode “Kathy’s Olympics.”

Melanie, according to her IMDb, was married to Robert Bernhardt for two years from 1994 to 1996. She also founded the organization Train Rite, which trains shelter dogs to help people who are disabled.

Melanie opened up about her iconic role in a 2020 interview with IndieWire, and spoke about the late Norman Lear’s work with disability. The actress remembered being “a pill” to work with, saying, “I was always playing with my yo-yo and listening to my Walkman.”

“I’m proud of Norman for going against the norm and doing something,” she added of the Diff’rent Strokes producer.

“I didn’t realize what a gift it was to be the first one out there. If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed in the business,” Melanie said.
