Scottish comedian Janey Godley has passed away at the age of 63 in a hospice, surrounded by her family. She had been undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer and had to cancel her tour called “Why Is She Still Here?”
Godley became famous during the pandemic for her funny videos that added voiceovers to Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid briefings. She revealed her ovarian cancer diagnosis in November 2021.
Her manager, Chris David, announced her passing, saying she died peacefully at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow with her loved ones by her side. He expressed great sadness, saying, “Janey will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and many fans. She will be remembered for her legendary voiceovers of Nicola Sturgeon during the pandemic, her funny and bold comedy, and most of all for just being ‘Janey.’”
A post on Janey Godley’s Instagram account included a video of her daughter sharing the news of her passing.
The post said: “Janey passed away in her sleep earlier this morning, with her family by her side.
“The love and support from all her friends and fans during her cancer journey brought her a lot of joy. It has also been a great comfort to us, her family and close friends. Thank you.”
“We will take some time to support each other and ask everyone to respect our privacy right now. Please remember her by laughing, as she would have liked that.”
This news comes just a few days after Janey Godley’s daughter, Ashley Storrie, said that her mom was in the “final beats of her life.”
On Thursday, Godley received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow and smiled for a picture holding her certificate while in her hospice bed.
