A man shared why he always gets a receipt after pumping gas. He said a gas station owner advised him to do so.

TikToker Larry Legend (@channelstudionews) has some advice for everyone who buys gas: Always keep your receipts. He learned this tip from a gas station owner.

In a viral TikTok with over 28,000 views, Larry explains why it’s important. He says it has to do with bad gas and who is responsible for it.

“Let me tell you what a gas station owner told me once: every time you get gas, always get the receipt,” he says while holding up a receipt for $10 of fuel.

“If you get bad gas in your car, the gas station is responsible for it,” he explains. “Having this receipt helps you prove that their gas caused the problem, so they can’t deny it.”

While it might sound like a warning from social media, some gas stations are actually selling “bad” gasoline. This usually means the gas has been watered down.

In September, residents in Chepachet, Rhode Island, were angry because they claimed a local gas station sold them bad gasoline that damaged their cars. In March 2024, a Conoco station in South Jersey made news after customers said they were sold tainted fuel.

But watered-down gas isn’t always due to dishonest business owners. One user on a forum mentioned that rainwater can sometimes accidentally get into gas tanks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has guidelines for gas stations to help prevent rainwater buildup.

Why is watered-down gas bad for your car? If there’s too much water mixed with the gas, it can cause problems like rough idling and misfires.

Many TikTok users who saw Larry’s video weren’t interested in his advice. One person said, “I scan my receipt in the app and then throw it away.” Another wrote, “When I ask for a receipt… and it says out of paper, I just leave.”

The Daily Dot has tried to reach out to Larry for more information through TikTok comments.
