12 People Dead, 29 Injured After Mass Shooting at Hanukkah Event in Australia

At least 12 people are dead and multiple others are injured following a mass shooting at Australia’s Bondi Beach.

Emergency services responded to reports of gunshots fired at Campbell Parade at around 6:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, Dec. 14, the New South Wales (NSW Police) said in a news release.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that at least 12 people were killed in the incident and 29 others were hospitalized, per the BBC. Lanyon added that a “significant investigation” will be led by counter-terrorism.

A man believed to be one of the shooters was killed in the shooting, while a second alleged gunman remains in a critical condition, according to the NSW Police.

Children and a police officer are allegedly among the victims, per News.com.au. The incident occurred as the Jewish community gathered for the beach festival, Chanukah by the Sea, attended by many children and families.

Footage posted on social media shows some victims of the shooting lying on the ground, while other videos capture the moment large crowds fled Bondi Beach amid gunshots and panicked visitors took cover behind tables and chairs at a local restaurant.

A gunman was filmed by one witness shooting at bystanders with a firearm while standing on a bridge overlooking Bondi Beach, per News.com.au.

The NSW Police said that there were several “suspicious items located in the vicinity,” following the shooting. These items are “being examined by specialist officers and an exclusion zone is in place.”
