Gavin Newsom Says His 9-Year-Old Son Took His Phone and Tried to Call Donald Trump

Newsom said his kids were originally searching for the cell phone number of YouTuber MrBeast when they got the idea to call the president

California Gov. Gavin Newsom revealed that not only does he have the president’s phone number — but that his own child tried to prank call Donald Trump himself.

Newsom, 58, made the revelation during an interview with political commentator Jack Cocchiarella on the Sunday, Dec. 7, episode of The Jack Cocchiarella Show. When the host asked, “What was the last thing Trump said to you?” Newsom replied, “Use this number any time,” before noting that he has the president’s cell phone number.

He then quipped, “We can call him now, if you want,” adding, “It alarms me to think that almost certainly he would answer the phone.”

But when Cocchiarella said he was “fully on board” with calling the president during their interview, Newsom retracted his offer, telling him, “Yeah, no, I can’t do that.”

He then explained, “My kids, by the way, tried to do that the other day, and they weren’t even kidding around.”

Newsom shares four children with his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom: Montana, Hunter, Brooklynn and Dutch.

The governor told Cocchiarella that his kids had been in search of YouTuber MrBeast‘s number — which he noted he “strangely” does have — when they got sidetracked with another quest: Tracking down Trump’s number.

“I’m like, ‘Oh God.’ And I literally find — he’s 9 years old — and he was literally pushing” buttons on the phone to call Trump, Newsom said, referring to his son.

“There’s a missed phone call to Trump from Dutch, my little guy,” he added. “Anyway, that’s another conversation.”

Dutch previously made headlines when he walked onstage during his dad’s inaugural address in 2019, wandering over to Newsom as he spoke to a crowd of his supporters.

While the governor has Trump’s cell phone number, he and the president have a fraught relationship, with Newsom often attacking Trump and his policies.

He recently mocked the president by posting his own doctor’s note signed by “Dr. Dolittle, Physician to the Governor, California Department of Peak Excellence” after Trump disclosed the results of an MRI he underwent in October.

And Newsom regularly takes jabs at the president online, where he mimics Trump’s social media style with his own aggressive, all-caps posts.

But the governor has a distant tie to MAGA, too, through his relationship with ex-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle, who was engaged to Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. before the couple split in 2024.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in April that sources had told them Guilfoyle helped Newsom secure a string of interviews with right-wing figures on his This Is Gavin Newsom podcast.

While Newsom has been a Democrat since his start in San Francisco politics in the ’90s, he’s said his podcast is an attempt to hear perspectives from both sides on “the most pressing issues of the day.”

Newsom is rumored to be planning a potential 2028 presidential run. A recent survey from the Public Policy Institute of California found that Newsom saw a surge in favorability from his constituents about one year after Trump returned to the White House, according to Politico.
